The 5th Wave Blog Tour

Today on the blog, I am thrilled to be taking part in the official GLOBAL blog tour for one of the biggest releases of the year, The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey.  Just in case you haven't heard of the book or are dying to know more, here's the synopsis...

The Passage meets Ender’s Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

Exciting, right? I have heard SO MANY good things about this book and I'm definitely reading this next!!  For this stop on the tour, I have an exclusive extract of the audio book which you can access here and trust me when I tell you that you're going to want to listen to it because you can win prizes!  There are TEN signed copies of The 5th Wave up for grabs. Each stop of the blog tour has an audio extract and, at the end of the tour, the extract in full will be available on the Penguin soundcloud.  Click on that link to enter the competition.

In The 5th Wave, our protagonist Cassie packs some essentials in her backpack before heading out on her own. As part of the blog tour, I was asked what I would put in my alien invasion survival backpack and here are my essential items (apart from food and water of course):

1. A survival handbook - This is ESSENTIAL advice for what to do and how to do it.  I'm going to need this to get me out of some sticky situations.

2. A HUGE book of waterproof matches - I know that these are going to run out eventually but I'm going to need them, at least in the beginning until I can figure out how to make fire on my own (presumably using my trusty survival handbook!)

3. Swiss Army knife - This is very lightweight and the tools would come in handy.   I actually have one of these somewhere.

4. A weapon of some kind - It sounds awful but in these kinds of situations, everyone is out for themselves and you need to protect yourself.  Of course, it could also double up as a tool, especially if it was a large knife or axe.

5. Wind up torch - I can't take a regular torch as the batteries are going to run out at some point.  I used to have a wind up torch and whilst it wasn't brilliant, it does the job and will last forever (until it breaks or you lose it).

6. Wind up radio - I expect the first thing to go would be TV and then possibly phone communications but there might still be a chance that someone could get a message out over the radio.  Again, a battery operated or plug in radio is out so a wind up one is the only way I could scan the airwaves for news, announcements or important messages.

7. A first aid kit - I'm a nurse, I'm going to need this for minor injuries and to treat others who need help.

8. Water purifying tablets - There may come a time when the only water I can access is ponds, rivers etc and so these will come in handy to make water safe and drinkable.

9. Lightweight, waterproof sleeping bag (and pillow) - I need my sleep and unfortunately, I'm not one of those people who can just sleep anywhere.  At least with a sleeping bag, I can guarantee some warmth and comfort WHEREVER I am and by God, that small pillow is coming with me!

10. A journal and pens - It might surprise you to see that the only book I've brought so far is a survival handbook but I would really love some sort of journal/diary to record my thoughts and experiences, even just as a way of recording what day it is and how long things have been going on.  I think it would also help psychologically to deal with the events.

11. Roll up Ladder - When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the fact that a fire could break out in the house and I often spent time trying to think about potential escape routes (Yeah, I know...).  I always wanted a roll up ladder that you could throw out of a window to help me escape.  Also, the ladder could be used to get IN to places, not just out of places.

12.  Lightweight bowl and spork (and can opener) - This might seem trivial to some but it would be nice to have something to eat out of and a spork is a cross between a spoon and a fork.  I also think a can opener is pretty essential as cans are going to be left on the shelves after all the fresh stuff has gone.

  1. Hadn't thought about wind up torch and radio - good idea! My main plan is to get to my boyfriend, who thinks about these things and is bigger than me, so can protect me!
