Forever My Girl Review

I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.

I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.

And now I’m going back.

After ten years.

I hope I can explain that after all this time.

I still want her to be my forever girl.

Okay, let’s be honest.  The cover and the synopsis drew me in to thinking that this would be the perfect book for me.  I mean, a hot rock star coupled with first love and a whole lotta angst? SIGN ME UP BABY!  This is an adult contemporary novel although it feels like it could be a New Adult book with characters in their late twenties.  You can tell by the synopsis, that this is going to be an emotional ride but I never really expected to feel the range of emotions that I did whilst reading and even now after reading, I’m still thinking about the book.

Liam and Josie were high school sweethearts headed for the perfect life together until Liam broke both their hearts by leaving without really explaining himself.  He might have shut himself off from his old life but he never stopped loving Josie.  Ten years later, his best friend from school is killed and it’s time to go back to Beaumont to pay his respects.  He’ll also get to see Josie again of course and all he wants to know is if she’s happy.  What he finds, will rock his world.

Forever My Girl is told from the alternating viewpoints of both Liam and Josie which is probably the ideal way to tell this story as it lets us into both of their heads.  What I liked most about this story is that it’s different from others in the same genre featuring rock stars.  When Liam goes back to Beaumont, he’s mostly just good old Liam that everyone used to know, they don’t look at him like he’s a celebrity, they just see the guy from high school. Thankfully, Liam is on the whole, a good guy.  He will make you swoon like crazy but you may also want to slap him at some point for being such an idiot.  Josie is a strong, brave lady who didn’t fall apart just because the love of her life left her.  Nope, she got on with her life the best she could and I admire her for that.

You just know that their first meeting is going to be...interesting...and it most certainly is but perhaps not for the reasons you think!  Now that Liam is back in town, emotions are heightened and not just because of the funeral.  There’s unresolved business between Liam and Josie but not everyone is going to want to stand by and watch – namely Nick, Josie’s fiancĂ©e.

I loved all the reveals in the book, all the explanations that fall into place and explain why things happened the way they did.  I have to say that I felt angry and hurt for them both that they wasted so much time being away from each other but who’s to say what would have happened if Liam had stayed.  He might have ended up resenting Josie and left anyway.  I guess we’ll never know.
Forever My Girl was the sweetest kind of reading torture and had me in tears several times during reading.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the spotlight shifts to Katelyn and a certain other character that appeared to be quite taken with her in this book.  It’s going to be another emo fest though as it’s probably too soon after losing Mason to even think about having a relationship with someone else.  I guess we’ll see ;)
